How to Prepare Your Lawn for Winter

As the days get shorter and the nights a little chillier, you might think that you are done tolling in the yard for a while. But, the fall season is not only a great time of the year for football and sweaters, it is also a great time of the year for your yard to recover from the heat of the summer and regenerate for the spring. Even after your lawn mower and sprinkler have been put up for the summer, there are a few more things that you can do to get your lawn prepared for the winter months ahead.

Feed Your Lawn
Depending on where in the country you live, applying a fertilizer can give your lawn a boost and help it get ready for the upcoming cold temperatures. You can hire someone to do this, or head down and do it yourself. If you do it yourself, be sure that you are applying it at the correct time of year for your area and read the directions on the fertilizer bag before you begin.

Aerate You Lawn
Fall is a prime time to aerate your lawn. This process puts small holes in your yard that allow water and nutrients to get down to the grass roots. You can rent a aerator for the afternoon from your local home improvement store if you don't have one on hand.

Water Your Lawn
Believe it or not, but those long hot days of summer have probably done a number on your lawn. Although in most parts of the country rainfall usually increases during the autumn months, before you put your hose away for the summer be sure your lawn is getting all the water it needs. You want your lawn to be moist and generally have about an inch of water every 14-21 days.
